India's collective experience helped tilt the balance

India's collective experience helped tilt the balance

Dubai: After a long wait of five years, India finally won a Test match in England. Without taking away any credit from the Indians, it would be a good exercise to check out if this victory can be looked at as one of India's remarkable achievements or was it because England were a weak side.

Statistically, it surely is an achievement, but the fact remains that the current English players are way behind in experience and exposure when compared with the Indians.

The most experienced English player is their skipper Michael Vaughan who has played in 69 Tests where as India have 3 players who have played in over 100 Test matches and another 2 in over 80 Test matches!

That brings us to the point as to how such an experienced squad almost went on to lose the Lord's Test?

But thanks to that shock, the Indians fought well in this Test.

It has been quite a while since all the top Indian players rose to the challenge and contributed equally to the team's success. This lack of consistency has always been India's biggest handicap.

England's attack now is undoubtedly one of the weakest with their two main strike bowlers James Anderson and Monty Panesar having played in less than twenty Test matches. Their batting too does not too formidable, except for Andrew Strauss who has been consistent and Kevin Pietersen as their only world-class batsmen in the team.

Struggle to survive

Though Vaughan did score a century in this Test, he has always struggled to live up to expectations.

It would also be interesting to note that India's top four batsmen together have over 30,000 runs in Test cricket where as England's top four has together recorded only over 12,000 runs in Test matches. Clearly then this is India's best chance to win the series. They have proved that they can perform even without the services of a foreign coach.

Zaheer Khan, who quickly realised the importance of leading a disciplined life off the field soon after losing his form, bowled brilliantly in this Test.

It is such an inspiring performance that is needed from the Indian bowlers. Young Dinesh Kaarthick and Wasim Jaffer too put up some competitive performances. It is now up to Dravid to carry on this spirit for the rest of the tour. A series win can lift the sinking morale of the Indian fans too.
